An automated intravenous (IV) monitoring device is provided comprising asensor for sensingdrips passing through an IV drip chamber, a processing unit for calculatingthe total infusedvolume over a predetermined period of time, and a display for displaying thetotal infusedvolume. The IV monitoring device preferably also calculates and displays theflow rate of thedrips. Additionally, an alarm can be activated if the flow rate drops below apredetermined value.A method of providing data pertaining to IV drips being infused into a body isalso disclosed.
