The present disclosure is directed to method of treating a herpes virus. In one embodiment, the method includes adding an effective amount of stannous fluoride (SnF2) to a dosage form. The dosage form may be a scrim, a liquid (e.g., a nasal mist, an aerosol spray, a liquid eye drop, a liquid bandage, and the like), a mucoadhesive or a lip balm.
