Disclosed is a wearable injection device (100) and a method of subcutaneously injecting a therapeutic agent (108) into a patient. The device (100) comprises housing (102)； an injection assembly； a vessel； a plunger； a plunger actuation mechanism (112)； a retraction trigger and a retraction mechanism. The housing (102) comprises a patient contact portion which is securable to the patient. The injection assembly is movably disposed in the housing (102) holding a hypodermic injection needle (118) for insertion into the patient. The injection assembly is movable between a retracted position and extended position wherein the needle (118) protrudes outside the housing (102). The vessel is provided in the housing (102) for holding the therapeutic agent. The plunger is movably disposed in the vessel for ejecting the therapeutic agent (108) from the vessel into the injection assembly. The plunger actuation mechanism (112) actuates the plunger within the vessel. The retraction trigger is responsive to a change in state of the device (100) from an injection state to a post-injection state. The retraction mechanism automatically retracts the injection assembly from the extended position in the injection state to the retracted position in the post-injection state upon triggering by the retraction trigger.
