The light shape sensing system includes an attachment mechanism 130 configured to secure the light shape sensing fiber to the instrument. The light shape sensing fiber is connected to the instrument and is configured to identify the position and orientation of the instrument. The light shape sensing module 115 is configured to receive feedback from the light shape sensing fiber and to align the position of the instrument with respect to the operating environment.
