An antimicrobial composition comprising (a) a cationic surfactant derived from the condensation of fatty acids and esterified dibasic amino acids, such as lauric arginate and (b) an antibiotic, such as of beta-lactam antibiotics, polypeptides, quinolones. The composition may be used as a stand alone antimicrobial formulation, or in combination with medical articles or medical devices.
