The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for sterilizing the handrail of an escalator. The apparatus prepared thereby comprises a case which has a shape to surround the handrail of an escalator and is attached to the escalator； a sterilizing module which is placed on the inner surface of the case and includes a light emitting diode to irradiate ultraviolet rays on the handrail； and a control unit which controls the sterilizing module not to irradiate ultraviolet rays in a state where the escalator stops while controlling the sterilizing module to irradiate ultraviolet rays in a state where the escalator operates. Through the structure, a user who grips the handrail with the hands can be protected from danger such as infection； the apparatus can minimize the consumption of electricity by performing sterilizing operation for the handrail only when an escalator operates； the apparatus can double the protecting effect through sterilization because the user can grip the handrail which is sterilized just before the use of the escalator.본 발명에 따른 에스컬레이터의 핸드 레일 살균 장치 및 방법은 에스컬레이터의 핸드 레일을 감싸는 형상을 가지고 에스컬레이터에 부착되는 케이스, 상기 케이스의 내측면에 위치하며, 상기 핸드 레일로 자외선을 조사하는 발광 다이오드를 포함한 살균 모듈, 상기 에스컬레이터가 정지 상태인 경우 상기 살균 모듈을 제어하여 자외선이 조사되지 않도록 하고, 상기 에스컬레이터가 동작 상태인 경우 상기 살균 모듈을 제어하여 상기 핸드 레일로 자외선을 조사하도록 하는 제어부를 포함하여 구성되며, 이를 통해 핸드 레일을 손으로 붙잡는 사용자가 감염 등의 위험으로부터 보호되고, 에스컬레이터가 동작 중인 경우에만 핸드 레일의 살균 동작을 수행함으로써 전력 소모를 최소화 할 수 있으면, 사용자가 에스컬레이터를 사용하는 경우, 직전에 살균된 핸드 레일을 붙잡고 이동할 수 있어 살균에 의한 보호 효과가 배가 된다.
