PURPOSE: A composition containing naphthoquinone compounds for controlling harmful algae is provided to selectively suppress growth of the harmful algae causing green tide or red tide. CONSTITUTION: A composition for controlling harmful algae contains a naphthoquinone compound of chemical formula 1 or a salt thereof as an active ingredient. The composition suppresses photosynthesis by acting at Q-site of a photosynthesis system. Cyanophyceae algae are Microcystis, Anabaena, Aphanizomenon, Oscillatoria, or Woronichinia genus algae. Bacillariophyceae algae are Stephanodiscus, Cyclotella, or Aulacoseira genus algae.
