The present invention provides a dry powder characterized by a composition that is stable in open air conditions, suitable for hydrogel formation applications. The dry powder includes a prepolymer comprising linear polyethylene glycol and a heat activated free radical initiator selected from the group consisting of sodium persulfate, potassium persulfate, and ammonium persulfate. The present invention also provides a method of forming a dry powder and a method of preparing a hydrogel, wherein the method of preparing a hydrogel forms a reaction mixture comprising the dry powder and a buffered aqueous solution.
