An airway sampling device 11 comprising a handle 13 with a chamber, a sampling head 17 which comprises a cavity (Figure 4A, 22), an opening for the sample and may have a detachable, absorbent membrane (Figure 4A, 23) within the cavity for the sample. The membrane may be exposed to elution buffer to elute the sample. The cavity may comprise a gutter (Figure 4A, 25), peripheral wall (Figure 4A, 19) around the sampling head, deformable chamber (figure 13, 33) and protrusions (figure 15D, 50). The sampling head may be movable between a first and second condition. The enclosure may be fluid-tight. A shield (figure 28A, 59) may be provided for shielding the sample from the user. The device may have a removable illumination module (Figure 29A, 65). The device may be shaped to place on the cavity over the vocal cords and within the oropharynx for taking a sample.
