PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact scanner provided in a capsule which satisfies a desired criterion related to imaging of an internal surface in a lumen.SOLUTION: A capsule 20 is coupled to a tether 22 that is manipulated to position the capsule 20 and a scanner 26 included within the capsule 20 at a desired position within a lumen in a patients body. Images produced by the scanner can be used to detect Barretts Esophagus (BE) and early esophageal cancer after the capsule is swallowed and positioned with the tether to enable the scanner in the capsule to scan a region of the esophagus above the stomach to detect a characteristic dark pink color indicative of BE. The scanner moves in a desired pattern to illuminate a portion of an internal surface. Light from the internal surface is then received by a detector in the capsule or is conveyed externally through a waveguide to an external detector.
