PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for orienting a heated fluid more accurately and applying pressure to a partially melted region of a substrate during a process of joining substrates together.SOLUTION: A method for joining substrate portions 11, 12 includes a step of positioning the substrate portions so as to overlap with each other in an overlapping region 15. Each of the substrate portions has a fusion temperature and an outer surface. A fluid is heated to a temperature sufficient to melt at least a part of the substrate portion. A jet 52 of the heated fluid is directed from a fluid opening 30 to the substrate portions in the overlapping region. The heated fluid permeates at least one of the outer surfaces of the substrate portions. At least a part of the substrate portion is melted using the heated fluid.
