PURPOSE: A composition containing a fermented genus Prunus stem bark for preventing alopecia and/or promoting hair growth is provided to promote cell proliferation of human dermal papillar cells. CONSTITUTION: An external use pharmaceutical composition for preventing alopecia and promoting hair growth contains 0.001-10 wt% of a fermented genus Prunus stem bark as an active ingredient, which is prepared by fermenting a genus Prunus stem bark extract with Saccharomyces unisporus. The genus Prunus stem bark is obtained from one or more kinds selected from the group consisting of Prunus yedoensis Matsumura, Prunus sargentii Rehder, Prunus pendula var. ascendens (Mak.) Ohwi, and Prunus serrulata var. spontanea (Max.)Wils. The extract is prepared using a solvent selected from the group consisting of water, C1-C4 alcohols, and a mixture thereof.
