The invention relates to covering thin layers with photocatalytic and antimicrobial properties and to processes for treating inner and outer surfaces of motor vehicles in order to ensure hydrophilization, adherence, anti-misting, self-hygienizing, anti-dusting, self-cleaning properties and indirectly reducing the vehicle noxious emissions. The claimed layers are colourless, have nanometric or micrometric dimensions and are made of three basic materials: TiO, SiOand Ag in the following different combinations: SiO, TiO+SiO, TiO+Ag and TiO+SiO+Ag, said layers being possibly doped with nitrogen :N or with nitrogen and silver : N + Ag, the variation in the percentage of N ranging between 1...5% and the variation in the percentage of Ag between 1...3%.
