There is provided an apparatus comprising a heat-generating component comprising an alkali metal. The alkali metal undergoes an exothermic reaction at the point of contact of the apparatus in the presence of water to produce heat in situ. The amount of heat generated is proportional to, and / or limited to, the amount (or mole) of water at the point of contact, and the resulting heat is sufficient to achieve an increase in temperature at the point of contact to achieve a therapeutic or beneficial result . In one embodiment, the device is used to reduce perspiration production in a subject suffering from hyperhidrosis or hyperhidrosis.
