The apparatus comprises a battery powered variable speed electric drive directly coupled to a reciprocating piston pump supported on a portable backpack with a remote dispensing handpiece connected by an umbilical hose. The dose is initiated by a trigger switch located on the remote dispensing handpiece that controls a single rotation of the electric drive output shaft driving the reciprocating piston through one metered dosing cycle. The speed of the electric drive can be adjusted to achieve the required dispensed herbicide spray pattern.
