It is disclosed that the compounds of general formulas I and II (as further defined herein) are useful in the generation of inhibitors of sphingolipid synthesis, sphingolipid production. Suitable sphingolipids include sphingosine and compounds that incorporate sphingosine, or compounds that can use sphingosine as an intermediate or starting material in the synthesis of the compound (including sphingosine-1-P, ceramide, ganglioside, and sphingomyelin, Is not limited to these), but is not limited thereto. In one contemplated use, compounds of general formulas I and II are useful in the production of sphingosine. In another contemplated use, the compounds of general formulas I and II are useful in the production of sphingofugins.
