PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a degradable zinc oxide powder which is good in usability and handling property and also excellent in ability to protect ultraviolet rays, transparency and feeling of use a process for producing the same and a cosmetic in which the zinc oxide powder is blended.SOLUTION: The degradable zinc oxide powder is characterized in that it is formed by the aggregation of tubular secondary particles which are formed by the aggregation of primary particles of zinc oxide. The average major diameter of tubes is usually 0.5-10 &mum and the ratio of the major diameter to the minor diameter of each tube is &ge1. The degradable zinc oxide powder is obtained by neutralizing an aqueous solution containing zinc chloride and acetic acid or zinc acetate with sodium carbonate and firing an obtained deposit.
