A vision tester comprising: a display； a camera； control means associated with said display and said camera and configured to: allow a user to switch the operations of said vision tester, use said camera to detect when the eyes of said user are within an acceptable distance from said display, use said display to represent different shapes to the said user for self-testing of vision, and for receiving responses entered by the user to the various forms mentioned. 2. The vision tester of claim 1, wherein said control means is further configured to determine a threshold modulation level of said various forms and to determine the consistency of said responses. The vision tester of claim 1, wherein said control means is further configured to use said camera to determine said allowable distance by measuring sizes of at least one of: a face of said user and an object of known physical size. The vision tester of claim 1, wherein said control means is further configured to use said camera to determine if one of said eyes is closed and whether said one of said eyes is a left eye or a right eye.
