A device 102 operable to confirm the position of a predetermined portion of a medical feeding tube in a predetermined portion of a human or animal body. The position confirmation device is made by providing an optical waveguide 106 such as an optical fibre having a sensing distal end 108 comprising a distal end material, and coating a sensing material and reflective material in a single polymer matrix onto the distal end material. The sensing material provides a change in optical properties at the distal end 110 of the optical waveguide dependent on the environment to which the sensing distal end 108 of the waveguide is exposed. A brightening agent may also be provided. The sensing material may detect pH or biological indicators. The distal end may be coated with a polymer matrix of polyurethane, barium sulphate, Bromocresol green and titanium dioxide.
