A root remover, e.g. for bulbs, rhizomes or tubercles, and especially cultivated garlic, consists of a tool with a rotary cylindrical cutter (9) which can turn in either one or both directions. Its cutting edges form an angle of 4-45 deg to one another and its angle of attack is between 0-25 deg to the cutter's axis, depending on the type of roots being cut. In a variant the cutter edge can be wavy in shape. The cutter is mounted on a tool holder which is easily detachable from a drive motor shaft and the tool also has a sliding support (13) for sharpening stones which keep the cutter edge sharp. The cutter's drive can be a pneumatic, hydraulic or electric motor, turning at 1000-6000 rpm.
