The present invention provides a non-anticoagulant sulfated or sulfonated polysaccharide (NASP) that accelerates the blood clotting process. Pharmaceutical formulations comprising NASPs of the invention in combination with pharmaceutically acceptable excipients are also provided, and in various embodiments, these formulations are unit dosage formulations. The present invention provides an orally bioavailable NASP formulation. Also provided are methods for utilizing the compounds and formulations of the invention that promote blood coagulation in vivo as therapeutic and prophylactic agents and in vitro as an aid to studying blood coagulation processes.
