Described herein are methods and antimicrobial solutions for controllinggrowth ofmicroorganisms and microbial pathogens on a metallic surface such as aluminum,titanium,zinc, magnesium, niobium, tantalum and anodizable alloys thereof. Theantimicrobial solutioncomprises at least one quaternary ammonium compound having antimicrobialactivity. Theantimicrobial solutions are useful for impregnating a porous layer of ananodized metal productand for creating an antimicrobial coating on a surface of the anodized metalproduct. Theantimicrobial solutions are also useful for conferring antimicrobialproperties to a metallicsurface and obtain a metallic surface effective in killing a broad spectrum ofmicroorganism,including various pathogens. Related aspects concern methods for creating anantimicrobialcoating on a surface of a metal product, comprising impregnating and/orcoating the surfacewith an antimicrobial solution as described herein.
