A method for producing an isolated HCMV membrane protein complex containing gH, gL and at least one additional HCMV glycoprotein, wherein said method comprises recombinant expression of said gH, gL and at least one more HCMV glycoprotein. 2. A method for expressing an HCMV membrane protein complex comprising gH, gL and at least one more HCMV glycoprotein by: - introducing one or more recombinant nucleic acid molecules encoding gH, gL and at least one more HCMV glycoprotein into the expression system； - expressing said one or more nucleic acids in said expression system； and - purification of the specified complex of membrane proteins. 3. The method of claim 2, comprising the step of transfecting mammalian cells with a first nucleic acid construct encoding a gH fragment lacking a transmembrane domain, a second nucleic acid construct encoding a gL protein； and a third nucleic acid construct encoding at least one further HCMV.4 glycoprotein. The method according to any one of the preceding paragraphs, wherein the HCMV membrane protein complex consists of gH, gL and gO.5.
