A filter for a submersible pump (12) comprising a filter housing (14) that is configured to releasably engage a housing (84) of the pump overlying an intake (24) of the pump； wherein the filter housing comprises a pair of generally parallel grates (44, 46) disposed generally inline with the pump intake where one of the grates (44) comprises an intake grate (48) inline with the pump intake and another one of the grates (46) comprises a filtrate grate (72) disposed inline with the pump intake between the pump intake and intake grate； wherein the housing defines a filtering chamber (34) disposed between the pair of generally parallel grates； and wherein the filter chamber has filter media (36) disposed therein.
