Pond filtration apparatus 10 for use in a pond or aquarium comprises a filter chamber 11 having a fluid inlet 13 and a fluid outlet 27 and adapted to house a filter medium 24. A spray head 23, which is connected to a fluid control valve 21, is in communication with the fluid inlet 13 of the filter chamber 11. The fluid control valve 21 is adapted to control movement of the spray head 23 between open and closed positions in response to the level of fluid within the filter chamber 11. When in an open position the spray head 23 is spaced from the fluid inlet 13 and fluid is dispensed over the filter medium 24. When in a closed position the spray head 23 engages with the fluid inlet 13 and prevents the flow of fluid from the fluid inlet 13.
