PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an artificial leg that makes both possible, i.e., walking on the smooth flat ground and going down a slope or a staircase.SOLUTION: In an artificial leg 1 equipped with a liquid pressure cylinder 7 to adjust the bending and extension resistance of a knee joint 9, are provided a buffer that makes a movable displacement 6 between a lower leg 4 below the knee joint 9 and a foot 5, the buffer 6 making a reverse-directed movable displacement between the contacts of the toe of foot 5 and the ankle with the ground an extension passage 73 and a bending passage 74 at a liquid pressure cylinder 7 a valve 76 to close upon contact of the toe with the ground at the bending passage 74 and a valve 77 to close upon a contact of the ankle with the ground at the bending passage 74A, the valve 76 and the valve 77 being connected with a valve closure connection actuator 78 so that they can have opening and closing operation together in the reverse direction to each other.
