587467 A magnetic targeting system suitable for guiding a biocompatible device (44), such as a spine stabilisation rod, to a target area within the body (in vivo) and method of using the same is disclosed. The system includes a targeting member (20), capable of moving though tissue and create a pathway for itself, which also has a steering material which is attracted by a magnetic field. The targeting member is attached to the biocompatible device by a tether (42). The system also includes at least one anchoring member (14) constructed and arranged for the inclusion of a magnetic material (62) effective for influencing the traversal of the steering material, in vivo. The magnetically influenced anchoring member interacts with the targeting member such that the targeting member and the tether are postponed in vivo where the biocompatible device is wanted. The biocompatible device then can be positioned relative to the target area by pulling the tether, progressing the biocompatible device through the pathway to the target area. Such a system alleviates the need for large incisions in and avoids misalignment of the biocompatible device.
