The invention includes compositions and methods useful for treatment of avirus infection in a mammal by double-targeting the virus (i.e. targeting thevirus at morethan one stage of the virus life cycle) and thereby inhibiting virusreplication. Thecompositions of the invention include compounds of formula III (shown below),whichcomprise a phosphocholine moiety covalently conjugated with one or moretherapeuticagents (e.g. nucleoside analogue, protease inhibitor, etc.) to a lipidbackbone. Theinvention also includes pharmaceutical compositions for use in treatment of avirusinfection in mammals. The methods of the invention comprise administering acompoundof the invention, a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or a prodrug thereof, orapharmaceutical composition of the invention, in an amount effective to treatthe infection,to a mammal infected with a virus. Additionally, the invention includescompositions andmethods useful for combating a cancer in a mammal and facilitating delivery ofatherapeutic agent to a mammalian cell. The compositions of the inventionincludecompounds, which comprise an alkyl lipid or phospholipid moiety covalentlyconjugatedwith a therapeutic agent (e.g., a nucleoside analogue). The invention alsoincludespharmaceutical compositions for combating cancer and facilitating delivery ofatherapeutic agent to a mammalian cell. The methods of the invention compriseadministering a compound of the invention, a pharmaceutically acceptable saltor aprodrug thereof, or a pharmaceutical composition of the invention, in anamount effectiveto combat a cancer or to facilitate delivery of a therapeutic agent to amammalian cell.(see formula III)
