The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition and to a food composition for preventing or treating neurodegenerative diseases, containing sandal tree extracts or fractions thereof as active ingredients, and to a method for preventing or treating neurodegenerative diseases, comprising a step of administering said compositions to an individual who suffers from a neurodegenerative disease or who is likely to have a neurodegenerative disease. Further, the present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition and to a food composition containing sandal tree extracts or fractions thereof as active ingredients to enhance learning capability or memory. Said sandal tree extracts or fractions thereof may effectively inhibit acetyl cholinesterase activity and neuroinflammation reactions, exhibit effects of preventing or treating learning disabilities or memory impairments while also exhibiting effects of enhancing learning capability or memory.
