Graphene-based antibacterial components and antibacterial materials using such antibacterial components can be applied onto fabrics to affect antibacterial actions thereon and sterilizing strength can be enhanced by using ultraviolet light. Oxidized graphene and its derivatives contain a certain range of reactive oxygen species. Water solubility of the oxidized graphene is crucial to the application of bioengineering. The maximum solubility of such materials in a solvent depends on the polarity of the solvent and the degree of surface modification. In recent studies, the oxidized graphene and its derivatives were found to show limited cytotoxicity (or, no cytotoxicity) and be highly biocompatible materials that promote the proliferation of cells in humans or higher primates.
