A pharmaceutical composition for treating urinary system disorders comprising (i) a carbon material as defined therein and (ii) a water-containing carrier, wherein the said composition has a carbon content of more than 60% by weight (wt%) and wherein the carbon material has a diameter from 2 nm to 2 mm. Furthermore, the carbon material falls within a range of 0.1 mg/ml to 500 mg/ml per unit dose. The composition may also comprise a metal particle such as silver, platinum, palladium, gold, zinc or copper. The composition is capable of reducing symptoms of cystitis by contacting the carbon material with the bladder or related tissues in the body.
