Ivy Bees (Col/etes hederae) are a relative newcomer to the UK - first being spotted in Dorset in 2001 (though they may have been in the area since the mid-90s).The Ivy Bee, as its name suggests, collects pollen exclusively from ivy, meaning it is one of the last solitary bees we see, appearing in late August and September and remaining active until October or November, weather permitting. Its lifecycle is verysimilar to its close relative, The Heather Colletes (Collates succinctus) which is common across the UK, though favouring upland and moorland areas. Again as the name suggests this bee forages almost exclusively on heather, so is also active late in theseason - though not as late as the Ivy Bee.
