Western lawmakers plan to reintroduce legislation as early as this week to boost federal firefighter pay, as the deadly Southern California wildfires move compensation and forest management policy back into the spotlight. The bipartisan legislation would permanently increase the pay scale for federal wildland firefighters at the Interior Department and the Forest Service. Rep. Joe Neguse (D-Colo.) and Sens. Steve Daines (RMont.) and Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) are expected to sponsor the bills, according to congressional aides who asked to speak on background to talk about the legislation before its introduced.
