摘要:
In 2008, Kirsty Squires obtained PhD funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council to conduct an in-depth assessment of the Elsham and Cleatham cremated bone assemblages at the University of Sheffield. This programme of research was designed to address four primary aims. The first aim of this project involved constructing a demographic profile of the Elsham burial population. This was achieved through a full osteological analysis of the cremated and unburned bone assemblages. The secondary aim of the project was to gain an understanding of the identity of the individuals buried at this site through an examination of the artefactual evidence and cemetery organisation. Here, information about the grave- and pyre-goods, cinerary urns, animal remains, and spatial distribution of burials at the site were analysed alongside the demographic attributes of the burial population. The third aim of this research was to explore the efficiency of the cremation process through a macroscopic examination of the burned bone alongside more technical forms of analysis, including histomorphometry and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The final and overarching aim of this doctoral project was to produce and disseminate a dataset detailing the cremated and unburned bone from the Elsham cemetery. The results of Kirsty Squires' doctoral research were published in 2012 and 2013 in the Archaeological Journal. This digital resource contains the data that were collected and discussed in these articles. The following dataset includes a full catalogue of the cremated bone and skeletal remains from the inhumation burials from this cemetery. This resource also contains a database of the burial co-ordinates from this site. The cremated and unburned bone, cinerary urns, and grave- and pyre-goods from both cemeteries are currently housed in North Lincolnshire Museum.

摘要:
In September 2009 Birmingham Archaeology was commissioned by Suffolk and Essex Water toundertake an archaeological evaluation in advance of a proposed pipeline between Wixoe andKirtling Green, Suffolk. This report records the results of the evaluation and highlights areas ofarchaeological significance. At Wixoe, cropmarks and previous fieldwalking identified denseconcentrations of artefacts dating to the Romano-British period. A geophysical survey identifieddistinct structures along with large pit like anomalies. The features identified by the evaluationconsisted of pits and postholes as well as linear ditches and were sealed by a thick layer ofburied soil which contained dense concentrations of tile and pottery as well as metalwork. ThisRoman activity continued to the north in Field 2 with several ditches and what appeared to bepossible structures with associated cobbled surfaces.Fields 13-16 showed evidence of sparse prehistoric and Roman activity that was sealed by alayer of colluvium. This activity is spread over a wide area and is not considered to be adiscrete area of occupation.Prehistoric activity was recorded between fields 25-27, with a large triple ditch feature in Field27 yielding large quantities of pottery and animal bone. In association with this was a calfburial. In Field 28 several ditch features were excavated which contained small amounts ofprehistoric pottery and may be a continuation of the activity seen in Field 27. The geophysicalsurvey in Field 26 recorded a number of discreet features including several ditch features andlayers of possible occupation debris dating from the Roman and medieval periods. The changesin slope direction in the field indicated radically different thicknesses of colluvial overburdenwhich varied from trench to trench, and in some cases the natural was not reached.Medieval activity recorded in Fields 39 and 41 was probably associated with the desertedmedieval village of Little Bradley, situated nearby. Field 41 also included a cremation burialprobably dating to the Late Bronze Age which, although isolated, may be part of a largercremation cemetery. The field at the northern end of the pipeline contained post medieval activity which related tothe former enclosures of the Great Bradley estate. This however does not tally with the Romanfinds recovered from the topsoil during the programme of fieldwalking.
