- BMI Industry View BMI View: Increasing incomes and populations will see south west Africa enjoy long-term growth in com production and this is reflected in this quarterly update, within which have revised upwards our forecasts for output of the crop in Namibia, and maintained it at previous levels in both Angola and Botswana since our last quarterly update. It will take time for all three nations to recover from the losses endured during 2015/16. While all three nations are predicted to remain net importers across during our five-year forecast period through to the end of our extended forecasts to 2020/21, we continue to see consumption growth outpacing production growth in both Angola and Namibia; meanwhile, in Botswana, this balance will be reversed. The strongest growth in demand is expected in Botswana where, after a decline in 2015/16, we expect output to flatten out in 2016/17 before recovering steadily over the remainder of the forecast period. In the sugar sector, meanwhile, we continue to see production in the key market of Angola beginning to return to a more familiar growth levels once more after a prolonged period of stagnant output.
