BMI Industry View BMI View: The Russian agricultural sector has responded strongly to the 2014 retaliatory ban on agricultural imports from the EU and other Western countries. Russia broke historical records in the production of wheat, corn, sugar, poultry and pork in 2017, and is approaching self-sufficiency in sugar and poultry. The interaction between geopolitics and trade policy will continue to introduce uncertainty into the sector, particularly in the dairy and livestock subsectors. Reforms to agricultural subsidies have been approved this year, hut the full repercussions of these changes will be known only in the coming years.
