A baler (10) and a method of controlling a baler (10) is disclosed. The baler (10) comprises: a compression system (28) for forming a bale (12) a feed system (26) having a pack mode for accumulating the crop (14) in a pre-compression chamber (48) and a lift mode for conveying the crop (14) to the compression system (28) a sensor arrangement (88) including at least one sensor (94, 98, 99 108) generating a signal, the at least one sensor (94, 98, 99 108) being coupled to the feed system (26), wherein the signal corresponds to a crop load on the feed system (94, 98, 99 108) and a control unit (112) configured to receive the signal from the sensor arrangement (88) and initiate the lift mode based on at least the signal. The method comprises: receiving a signal from a sensor (94, 98, 99 108) coupled to a feed system (26) having a pack mode for accumulating crop (14) in a pre-compression chamber (48) of the baler (10), wherein the signal corresponds to a crop load on the feed system (26) and initiating a lift mode for conveying the crop (14) to a compression system (28) of the baler (10) for forming a bale (12) based on at least the signal.
