A cutting blade for vegetation is provided for example for use in a strawchopper or rotary mower. The blade includes a first base material and aplurality ofhard surface beads of at least two different materials formed on at least onesurfaceof the base material extending up to a cutting edge of the base materialwherein theplurality of hard surface beads lie alternately side by side with touchingside edgesand one contains at least one different material of a different hardnessrelative to theother so that differential wear rates are created, and a wear profile iscontrolled. Thesofter material is burnt away at the edge by the cladding laser to formpockets sothat the blade is serrated by the pockets when supplied with additional wearincreasing the pockets to maintain the serrations.
