A medical device for use in the creation of a temporary pneumoperitoneum, comprising a substantially dome-shaped body 3 having a vacuum port 9 to provide a fluid passageway between the underside 7 of the dome-shaped body and the upside 5 of the dome-shaped body and a frustoconical port 11. The frustoconical port 11 is arranged for reception and throughpassage of one or more pieces of medical apparatus therethrough. Preferably, a plug 13 is inserted into the frustoconical port 11 to close that port so that with the exception of the vacuum port 9, the entire medical devices dome shaped body 3 is sealed. The configuration of medical device will provide greater flexibility of movement for medical apparatus passed therethrough.
