What is claimed is: A suture staple applicator system, comprising: (a) a suture staple applicator (100) for firing a suture staple (150) onto a suture (131), the staple applicator comprising : a cover (110); an elongated plunger (120) supported with the ability to slide on the cover, the plunger having a distal end part (122) disposed within the cover and a proximal end part (123) extending from a proximal end of the cover ; a hollow tube (160) extending distally from the cover and defining a lumen therethrough; a drive element (130) having a distal end that extends into the hollow tube (160) and a proximal end operatively coupled with the plunger (120); and a work tip (140) coupled to a distal end of the hollow tube (160), where the work tip has a cross-sectional profile, essentially U-shaped defining a channel (146) having a wall base (146a) and a pair of separate side walls (146b, 146c), where the working tip defines: a lower contact surface along an inner face of the base wall (146a) and a surface of defined upper contact along an upper end surface of each side wall (146b, 146c), wherein the upper contact surface of each side wall includes: a distal ejection shoulder (141e) and a distal recess (141d) formed near a distal end thereof and a proximal recess (141b) formed proximal to the distal recess; and an internal retention surface (146d, 146e) on both side walls parallel to the base wall, where the distal end of the actuator (130) is configured to engage a suture clip (150) loaded on the tip of work (140); and (b) a suture clip (150) that can be loaded and deployed from the working tip (140) of the suture clip applier, the suture clip comprising: an elongated flexible rod (151) having a portion of distal end, a proximal end portion, an upper surface and a lower surface, the flexible bar also including a pair of arms (155) extending laterally therefrom; and an elongated rigid channel (152), wherein the elongated rigid channel has a cross-sectional profile, essen
