THE PRESENT INVENTION PROVIDES AN ANTIBACTERIAL AGENT CONSISTING OF CLAY CONTAINING METAL SELECTED FROM SILVER, COPPER, ZINC AND THEIR MIXTURES AND AT LEAST ONE QUARTERNARY AMMONIUM COMPOUND, WHEREIN THE MOLAR RATIO OF THE METAL TO THE QUARTERNARY AMMONIUM COMPOUND IS BETWEEN 40:60 AND 60:40, PREFERABLY IT IS 50:50. THESE ANTIBACTERIAL AGENTS ARE HEREIN REFERRED TO AS ORGANO-METAL-CLAYS. PARTICULARLY, THE QUARTERNARY AMMONIUM COMPOUND IS SELECTED FROM TETRAALKYLAMONIUM COMPOUNDS, WHEREIN THE ALKYLS ARE THE SAME OR DIFFERENT AND CONTAIN 1 TO 30 CARBON ATOMS, ALKYLPYRIDINIUM COMPOUNDS, WHEREIN THE ALKYL CONTAINS 1 TO 30 CARBON ATOMS, OR BENZALKONIUM (N-ALKYL-N-BENZYL-N,N-DIMETHYLAMMONIUM) COMPOUNDS. IN THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE PRESENT INVENTION, THE ALKYL CONTAINS 1 TO 30 CARBON ATOMS, WHEREAS THE COUNTERION IS HALOGENIDE, AND THE MENTIONED CLAY IS PREFERABLY SELECTED FROM KAOLINITE AND BENTONITE.
