An effervescent composition for addition to drinking water for an animal, comprising an effervescent agent and a palatant, where the palatant includes a hydrolyzed protein palatant. ! 3. The composition according to any one of claims 1 or 2, wherein the effervescent agent comprises a combination of an acid and a basic carbonate. ! 4. The composition according to claim 3, where the acid is selected from the group consisting of citric acid, malic acid, tartaric acid, adipic acid and fumaric acid and mixtures thereof. ! 5. The composition according to claim 3, where the basic carbonate is a salt selected from sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, potassium carbonate and mixtures thereof. ! 6. The composition according to claim 3, where the mass ratio of acid to basic carbonate is in the range from 1: 1 to 1: 1.3. ! 7. The composition according to claim 1 or 2, further comprising one or more additional components selected from flavors, sweeteners, colorants, micronutrients and functional ingredients. ! 8. The composition according to claim 7, further comprising cranberry juice. ! 9. The composition according to claim 1 or 2, in the form of a tablet or powder. ! 10. A drink for use in treating an animal with hydration in which the effervescent composition of any one of the preceding claims is dissolved. ! 11. The use of an effervescent composition comprising an effervescent agent and palatant, as an additive in drinking water for an animal. ! 12.
