PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide compositions and methods for treating or preventing upper gastrointestinal disorder and protecting the stratified squamous epithelium from injury due to a noxious substance.SOLUTION: Provided is a composition for treating or preventing upper gastrointestinal disorders comprising a therapeutically effective amount of colesevelam or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. In addition to colesevelam, the composition may comprise at least one proton pump inhibitor or histamine H2 receptor antagonist in a therapeutically effective amount.
