A method of providing and enabling surgical and surgical systems. The surgical system includes a console and a first component configured for removable attachment directly or indirectly to the console. The surgical system includes a sensor circuit disposed relative to the console and a first target state identification circuit disposed with respect to the first component. The sensor circuit outputs a feedback signal indicating the state of the electrical connection of the first target state identification circuit to the sensor circuit.
