The present invention is related to antimicrobial and anti-tumor activities of the leaves extract and active fractions from the Gymnosperma glutinosum plant. Said extract inhibits the growth, in liquid and solid media, of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Candida albicans (ATCC 32354), Mycobacterium smegmatis, enterohemorragic (HEC) E.coli O157:H7 (ATCC 43895), non-pathogenic E. coli (ATCC 25922) (NPEC) and Vibrio cholerae in an optimum environment for the growth thereof. The inventive extract also includes an anti-tumor effect against the growth of the murine lymphoma L5178Y-R, the cell death mechanism being by apoptosis. The present extract is toxic free for normal cells such as macrophages.La presente invención se refiere a las infecciones por los microrganismos, incluyendo bacterias, virus y hongos, son una causa importante de morbilidad y mortalidad humana. En las últimas tres décadas ha renacido el interés por los productos naturales y sus posibles aplicaciones en la industria agrícola, alimentaria y farmacéutica； ésta última, en su búsqueda de medicamentos nuevos y más eficientes. La presente invención se relaciona con la actividad antimicrobiana de un extracto de hojas y fracciones activas de la planta Gymnosperma glutinosum. Este extracto inhibe el crecimiento en medio líquido y en medio sólido de Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Candida albicans (ATCC 32354), Mycobacterium smegmatis, E. coli O157:H7 (ATCC 43895) entero hemorrágica (HEC), E. coli no patógena (ATCC 25922) (NPEC), y Vibrio cholerae en un ambiente óptimo para su crecimiento.
