An ear bud is provided for wirelessly communicating with an electronic device. In order to determine the current state of the earbuds and to take appropriate action when controlling the operation of the electronic device and the earbuds, the earbuds may be provided with sensor circuitry. The sensor circuit can include proximity sensors. The earbuds may each have a housing having a main body portion configured to be inserted into a user's ear and an elongate stem portion extending from the main body portion. Proximity sensors may include sensors on the main body and sensors on the stem.
