A method of measuring expiratory flow rate of a subject using a whistle (20) is disclosed. The method comprising: detecting a sound generated when the subject blows into the whistle (20) and determining the expiratory flow rate (65, 93) of the subject using a frequency of the detected sound. A computer program (40) operable, when run on a detection device (30), to cause the detection device (30) to operate according to the method is also disclosed.
