A replaceable rod assembly for use with a surgical instrument, the surgical instrument including a frame functionally supporting a plurality of drive systems and forming an activation axis, the rod assembly comprising a first rod configured to apply the first activating movements to a surgical end functionally associated with it an effector, moreover, the proximal end of the first rod is configured to functionally releasably connect to the first one of the supported frames systems in a direction substantially transverse to the axis of activation. 2. The replaceable rod assembly according to claim 1, further comprising a second rod assembly configured to apply second activating motions to the end effector, wherein the proximal end of the second rod assembly is operably detachably connected to the second one of the supported drive system frames in a direction substantially transverse to the axis of activation. 3. The replaceable rod assembly according to claim 1, wherein the frame comprises a handle portion of a portable surgical instrument.
