An agricultural row unit (10) comprises a row unit frame (14) having a downwardly-extending shank (15). A depth sensor (1220) is connected to the row unit frame (14) and includes a pivot arm (1222) pivotally mounted to a bracket (1210) which is mounted to a lower portion of the shank (15). The pivot arm (1222) includes left and right ground-engaging fingers (1224-1,1224-2) having ground-engaging portions which are spaced by a transverse spacing that is wider than a trench (3) opened by the row unit (10) such that the fingers (24) contact the soil surface (7) on either side of the trench (3). A sensor is configured to generate a signal related to the angular position of the pivot arm (1222).
