Disclosed is the use of an isolated cardiomyocyte wherein expression, the amount and/or the activity of heart and neural crest derived 2 (HAND2) or a functional part, derivative and/or analogue of HAND2 is increased as compared to the same kind of cell in its natural environment, or of a non-human animal comprising an isolated cardiomyocyte wherein expression, the amount and/or the activity of heart and neural crest derived 2 (HAND2) or a functional part, derivative and/or analogue of HAND2 is increased as compared to the same kind of cell in its natural environment, for determining whether a candidate compound is capable of counteracting or at least in part preventing cardiac hypertrophy. Further disclosed is a method for determining whether a candidate compound is capable of counteracting cardiac hypertrophy, comprising: - culturing an HAND2 or HAND2-like expressing cell in the presence of said candidate compound, wherein the HAND2 or HAND2-like expressing cell is an isolated cardiomyocyte wherein expression, the amount and/or the activity of heart and neural crest derived 2 (HAND2) or a functional part, derivative and/or analogue of HAND2 is increased as compared to the same kind of cell in its natural environment and - determining, preferably after at least 12 hours, whether expression of HAND2 or HAND2-like by said cell is lower than expression of HAND2 or HAND2-like by the same kind of cell cultured in the absence of said candidate compound, whereby a compound that counteracts HAND2 expression is a candidate compound for counteracting cardiac hypertrophy.
